Bill McHenry Quintet
By trading expressionism for a measured approach that gives each of his cascading lines a chance to be remembered for longer than a minute, the saxophonist makes his music sound very, very deliberate. His hook-up with trumpeter Duane Eubanks finds this strategy spreading around the bandstand—everyone's thinking about their next note. It gives their recent Sonic Pressure a chilly vibe, but things get heated as you start to unravel their puzzles. This gig also features alto player Andrew D'Angelo, who always has more than enough emotion to go around.
