Children of the Pyre

(Rajesh S. Jala, 2008). This devastating doc is the portrait of seven "untouchable" boys who make their living out of the dead at the busiest cremation ground in India at Varanasi, the ancient city on the banks of the Ganges. They stoke the fires that keep the pyres eternally burning and scrounge for burial shrouds to resell. Jala's movie is a terrible saga of exploitation that celebrates the victory of innocence over the harrowing realities of life.
