The Figment Festival takes over Governors Island

There's no lovelier outdoor haven in the city than Governors Island, the formerly closed-to-the-public and amazingly well-preserved blip in New York Harbor, home to stately colonials, shady colonnades, and a fort. This weekend, the usually sleepy isle wakes up to host the Figment Festival, which brings more than 400 interactive-art pieces to the tranquil lawns. Some will remain all season long to form a sculpture garden, like Deborah Yoon's giant beehive (HiveMind) and Benjamin Jones and Anna Hecker's Discarded, a mythical creature created entirely of objects scavenged from Brooklyn streets on trash night. Other festival figments include dancers, performance artists, and live bands.
