(Richard Lester, 1965). Richard Lester’s mock cinema vérité account of a day in the life of the world's most famous rock band is not a great film, but it's laden with cultural significance. Forty decades after its release, A Hard Day’s Night has never seemed more familiar, nor more remarkably prescient—MTV decades before its invention. Although the movie is all about image, what’s amazing is that its self-reflexivity hardly seems cynical. The term “innocent” is barely innocent enough to describe the Beatles’s prehistoric antics.
