Brighton Rock

(John Boulting, 1947). One of the key works of British cinema of the 1940s, beautifully shot by Harry Waxman, Boulting's thriller does a good job of capturing the mood of nihilist despair and hopeless fear of Graham Greene's superb between-the-wars novel. Richard Attenborough delivers a superb portrait of the sadistic and cowardly seventeen-year-old Pinkie.
