RENAISSANCE MAN

Indie artist Dan Graham gets his first U.S. retrospective

Opting to get his education in the New York art world instead of at college, Jersey boy Dan Graham moved to the city in the early-’60s and began his career as a writer and founder of the short-lived John Daniels Gallery before moving on to create his own highly influential conceptual art. Since then, it’s safe to say that there’s almost nothing he hasn’t tried. Dan Graham Beyond is his first retrospective in the United States and features his photographs, projects for magazine pages, films, architectural models and pavilions, performances, video installations, prints, drawings, and writings, as well as his work with musicians Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, and Japanther. As part of the retrospective, the Whitney is also hosting indie-rock concerts (Friday at 7 is an acoustic set by the Feelies), artists’ talks, a film screening, and a family punk-rock program—for hipsters in training.
