Pierre de Gaillande

By Richard Gehr

Saturday, June 20th 2009 at 3:42am

Paris-born, California-bred Pierre de Gaillande may not be the first musician to translate French poet Georges Brassens's (1921-81) songs into English, but he may be the most scrupulously faithful to a songwriter pitched somewhere between Jacques Brel and Serge Gainsbourg (with a dollop of Francois Villon). Accompanied by clarinetist David Spinley, de Gaillande will perform the anarchist poet's often-controversial songs about seafaring life and the Paris demimonde. With the Pre-War Ponies.
