(Luchino Visconti, 1963). There are movies that invent a genre to which their successors can only aspire. Jean Renoir’s Rules of the Game is one. Visconti’s adaptation of The Leopard is another. This sumptuous historical drama is more pageant than action film, less reconstruction than reverie, made with an artistry only comprehensible in the uncut Italian version showing here.
