Her manic trills and runs project an admirable derangement, but in her native Japan, composer/keyboardist Hiromi is as famous for her coolly composed style as her gold records and jazz fest victories. The post-bop fusionist (and her architecturally piled, neon-streaked hair) pulls from her extensive classical pedigrees—stints at the Yamaha School of Music in Tokyo and the Berklee School in Boston—only to funnel them through poppier paths: the synaptic flourishes of Chick Corea, the tinny Moog effects of Bowie's control deck. The Telarc progeny's latest, Beyond Standard, found her trio gamely inverting Hammerstein and Debussy with all the style of their times and her own.
