The roomy and, more important, air-conditioned Walter Reade Theater is the perfect place to wind down from the parties and still keep your patriotic spirits high with a day of classic American movie musicals. Part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's A Musical Marathon (which started Friday), today's films include Howard Hawks's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes(1953), starring national treasures Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as gold-digging lounge singers (at 1 p.m.); Vincente Minnelli's An American in Paris (1951), the Gene Kelly–choreographed masterpiece about an American artist in love with an already-engaged Parisian (at 3 p.m.); Stanley Donen's On the Town (1949), about sailors (including Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra) on shore leave in New York City (at 5:15 p.m.); and Milos Forman's Hair (1979), which transforms Central Park into a hippie paradise (at 7:15). And though the Who's rock opera Tommy (at 9:45 p.m.) isn't so American, Tina Turner playing the Acid Queen definitely is.
