New Yorks annual gay and lesbian tennis tournament the Liberty Open was created in 1993 by the Metropolitan Tennis Group as part of the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA), which manages and sponsors an international coalition of tournaments. Played annually over the July Fourth holiday, the Liberty Open features more than 200 athletes from all over the U.S. and Canada competing in five competitive divisions—including a full array of womens and mens events. The finals are played at Court Number 1, where U.S. Open titles are won. There is no charge for spectators, and proceeds are donated to a charitable organization as part of the MTGs ongoing dedication and commitment to the community.
