The Royal Tenenbaums

(Wes Anderson, 2001). Wes Anderson's sweet, funny ensemble piece is a comic fairytale about a J.D. Salinger family living in the memory of their F.A.O. Schwartz childhood. As elusive in its mood as an autumn dusk and as homey in its characterizations as the Sunday funnies, the movie is set in an enchanting alternate Manhattan. Elaborate as Anderson's gags can be, his humor blends the wistful and uproarious; beneath the layers of cleverness, there’s an underlying melancholy.
