Opera: Classiest whilst free
There are two camps of summertime aficionados here: those who find the season best absorbed face-up in the Hamptons, and those who brave the melting urbanity to partake in the truly astounding array of free entertainment. We at the Voice prefer to be the latter, the subway-stuck craven culturites (caveat: because we are poor), and we'll see you at the sublime Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital. The array of arias and standards features Tony Award–winning and Met lead baritone Paulo Szot, Lisette Oropesa (soprano), Alek Shrader (tenor), and Vlad Iftinca (piano). It's quite the pinkie-out way to take in the Summerstage series.
