How Green Was My Valley

(John Ford, 1941). Ford's magnificent adaptation of Richard Llewellyn's novel about the slow and tragic disintegration of a Welsh mining family and of the valley in which they lived won five Oscars and deserved every one of them. It's one of the rare Hollywood "classics" that lives up to its rep on repeated viewings.
