The slimy, gooey Alien turns 30

Director Ridley Scott's Alien brought a lot of good to the world: For one, there's the hotness that is a heavily breathing Sigourney Weaver, and then there's one of the greatest movie monsters of all time, the amorphous alien with the gooey "vaginal mouth," as one critic called it. As the slimy, pulsating creature invades a spaceship called "Mother," it's fun to think about why scholars of the genre consider the thriller to have less to do with space battles than with wanting to fuck your mom. Scary! Film Forum celebrates Alien's 30th birthday with a week-long showing of a new 35mm print.
