David Goldblatt didn't choose to photograph a racially segregated society, he just happened to be born into one. As the son of Jewish Lithuanian parents who fled to South Africa to escape religious persecution, Goldblatt documented the effects of the National Party's apartheid legislation in the '60s. His latest exhibition Intersections Intersected, at the New Museum, showcases his intimate photographs that captured not just the extremities of this environment but the day-to-day life, and also in sorts is a retrospective of his work throughout the years. The photographs, both past and present works, are displayed side-by-side, pairing his older black-and-white images with his more recent color work.
