(Vittorio deSica, 1952). DeSica's last major neo-realist work, this poignant and pessimistic film about the solitude of an elderly poor pensioner whose only friend is a little fox terrier seems a tad contrived these days, although its cinematography by the great Aldo is beyond reproach.
