Arthur Russell's signature personal, quirky art-disco—not to mention his string compositions, electronic pop, and his country songs—was little known outside of the New York underground when he died of AIDS-related complications in 1992 at what should have been the peak of his career. Today's fans know him only through a seemingly endless series of re-releases and posthumous releases, and Matt Wolf's 2008 documentary, Wild Combination. Luckily for us, some of his old friends and collaborators (Steven Hall, Peter Zummo, Ernie Brooks, Joyce Bowden, Mustafa Ahmed, John Scherman, Bill Ruyle, and Elodie Lauten) have banded together to perform his music live. This afternoon's P.S.1 Warm-Up performance should tide us over until they release a CD this summer and deliver the Arthur-o-Rama festival this fall. With the disco house joys of Balihu's Daniel Wang and the analog/found-object experiments of MV Carbon and Aki Onda.
