'Sondheim & Styne'

Bill Charlap, the Jazz in July Festival's curator and pianist extraordinaire, likes his ducks in a row—so, with insightful decisions regarding group chemistry, this kick-off show should find everything coming up roses. Singer Kurt Elling is the front man for a terrific mid-sized ensemble that boasts Brian Lynch's trumpet and Jimmy Greene's tenor, two of the most lyrical instruments in town. As they roll through the deep songbooks of Sondheim and Styne, they'll edify how Broadway supplied jazz with tune after tune after tune.
