Pennsylvania distorto-pop sound-suckers Black Moth Super Rainbow have gone through great lengths to make their own colorful and unsettling universe. Flaming Lips–size hooks get drowned in a tape-warped sea of molten muck, party-starting beats are treated to a Codeine cocktail, and triumph is expressed best through the icy warble of vocoders. Second album, Eating Us, is a mutant mass of warm fuzz and suffocating synths, but is still somehow one of the best pop albums of the year. Trend-spotters know opening act Blank Dogs for his more traditional approach to making "lo-fi": cassette-tape-quality guitar squeals, unintelligible vocals, a bazillion kajillion releases. But the Brooklynite adds an Ian Curtis layer of mysterious melancholy that's missing from the more bombastic Times New Vikings of the world. With Dan Friel.
