Latin film fest gets gritty and real

Che is one tough mother-effer. Wait, not that Che, but the gangster dude of the new film La Mission, starring Benjamin Bratt and directed by his brother, Peter Bratt. The film gets its red-carpet New York premiere at the opening night of the 10th annual New York International Latino Film Festival, which features a range of new works from Latino filmmakers in the U.S. and Latin America. In La Mission, Bratt plays a former gangster and recovering alcoholic in the seedy neighborhood of San Francisco's Mission District who struggles to overcome his macho homophobic ways when his beloved son comes out of the closet. Also having its New York premiere tonight is road-trip movie Cruzando, which stars Mando Alvarado and Michael Ray Escamilla, and tells the story of a young Texan who misses the birth of his first child to be with his own father on the day of his execution in a Mexico prison.
