Twenty Years Later--A Man Labeled to Die

(Edouardo Coutinho, 1984). Coutinho's hybrid doc is one of the highlights of MOMA's excellent Brazilian show. In 1963 the director went to the poor Northeast of the country to shoot a film about the murder of a peasant league leader. Production was halted by the military coup of 1964. In 1984, he returned to the region, tracked down the dead man's family, showed them the salvaged footage and recorded their reactions to it. The result is a poignant drama that reveals the human cost of military rule and repression.
