A yo-yo is not just about Walking the Dog anymore

If you know how to do the Laceration Combo, the Cow Wrap, and the Reverse Suicide, you may have what it takes to be a yo-yo master, dear reader-san. Today, head over to the Hotel Pennsylvania to try out for Saturday's third annual International Yo-Yo Open and New York State Yo-Yo Contest, which will be held at South Street Seaport. Presented by YoYoNation.com, the main event draws amateurs and experts from around the world to compete for prizes. You'll also see live music by the colorful Japanese punk band Peelander-Z, DJs, breakdancers, contests, giveaways, and vendors selling yo-yos that range from novice to professional (some cost as much as $450).
Tryouts at 11 a.m., Hotel Pennsylvania, 401 Seventh Avenue; main event is Saturday at 11 a.m., South Street Seaport, Pier 17, Fulton and South streets
Fri., Aug. 7, 11 a.m.; Sat., Aug. 8, 11 a.m., 2009
