Although Cukor's 1940 adaptation of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn was a hit, his subtle, underrated screen version of Barry's Holiday, made two years earlier, with Grant as a nonconformist outsider who falls for rebellious society girl Kate, was a flop at the box office, but a much better picture.
