SUNDAY MORNING

Richard Unterberger discusses his new book on the Velvet Underground

From the Velvet Underground's first 1965 concert at Summit High School Auditorium in Summit, New Jersey (picture bored teenagers walking out during "Heroin"), to Lou Reed's bitter departure in 1970 and all the sex, drugs, and infighting in between, esteemed rock writer Richard Unterberger's new biography White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-by-Day takes fans behind the scenes of one of rock's most iconic bands. The book features about 100 interviews with musicians, Warhol associates, and rock critics, including Richard Goldstein, who is credited with writing the first substantial article on the VU in this very paper in 1966. Today, Unterberger tells their incredible story using rare film clips, little-heard recordings, and seldom-seen photographs and posters. Though the event is at comedy club Comix, don't expect any banana-peel gags.
