The Third Man

(Carol Reed, 1949). This, even more than Kane, made Orson Welles a myth. Set in the broken heart of Europe, The Third Man is a fun-house Casablanca—its geopolitical romance and inherent megalomania appropriate to the Cold War’s bleary dawn. Two-thirds of the way through, Welles makes one of the most dramatic star entrances in movie history; from that moment on, it’s his show.
