Friendly Fires

Equally influenced by Prince and Detroit techno producer Carl Craig, UK dance rockers Friendly Fires have been tapped by betting firm William Hill as having 8:1 odds of winning this year's Mercury Prize. Their self-titled debut makes no qualms about picking up where Franz Ferdinand left off; singles "Skeleton Boy," "Paris," and the icy "Jump In the Pool" are all about getting up to get down. Mixing Cut Copy's '80s èlan with trance-inspired beats, Friendly Fires might be completely derivative, but don't despair, Anglophiles. They're still a helluva lot better than La Roux.
