The Philadelphia Story

(George Cukor, 1940). This acclaimed adaptation of Philip Barry's play sports a witty if conventional script and a fine cast headed by Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It has nearly all the ingredients for a first-rate romantic comedy. It's a bit too much of a talkfest, but Cukor makes it work, in a triumph of directorial pacing.
