British artist Jon Burgerman finds Brooklyn hipsters inspiring

British street artist Jon Burgerman says he used to get into trouble with his teachers for doodling in class. Now, the self-described “professional doodler” gets paid to put his cracked-out cartoon characters on surfboards for Rip Curl, tennis shoes for Nike, and sweatshirts for Kidrobot and even has his own line of toys under his brand Burgerplex. (Ha! Take that, teachers!) His current solo exhibit at Giant Robot Gallery is titled My American Summer and consists of the artwork he made during his three-month vacation to Los Angeles and New York, which are said to be inspired by his outsider observations of Americans—especially that rare breed known as the Brooklyn hipster. Check out his drawings on paper and their three-dimensional versions handmade by plush toy expert The Felt Mistress.
