Yes, we all applaud the attack of this drum wonder, but more thrilling is his of finesse and flamboyance displayed on a regular basis, such as last week at Newport. It comes from a deep self-assurance, immeasurable chops, and a world view that stresses the art of dazzle—here's an entertainer who likes to impress everyone around him. Make sure you register how well alto player Jaleel Shaw keeps up, especially on the Monk tunes.
