The Book of Exodus declares, “If there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.” The Holocaust certainly constitutes a serious injury, so in Paris 1946, a group of Jews decide to put God’s words into action. Daniel Goldfarb’s play, The Retributionists, based on historical events, concerns a cadre of survivors who determine they will execute one German for every Jew who has died—a six-million man assassination plot. Leigh Silverman directs this Playwrights Horizons’ season opener, which features Margarita Levieva, Cristin Milioti, and Adam Rothenberg. Call them Glorious Basterds.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2:30 p.m.; Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Aug. 21. Continues through Sept. 27, 2009
