Growing up, journalist Laurie Sandell loved hearing her Argentinian father's stories of winning war medals and rubbing elbows with famous people only to realize, as an adult, that her father was a fraud. Tonight, she'll share her heartbreaking story, colorfully told in her new graphic novel The Impostor's Daughter: A True Memoir, at the Happy Ending Music and Reading Series. Hosted by delightful downtown gal Amanda Stern, the graphic books–themed evening also features author and graphic designer Chip Kidd (Bat-Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan), who plans to do a dramatic reading of a Japanese Batman story from 1966 titled "Lord Death Man," and sing a Radiohead song a cappella. Brian Selznick, author and illustrator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, rounds out the literary portion of the night; singer-songwriter Amy Correia is the musical guest.
Wed., Sept. 2, 7 p.m., 2009
