On March 20, 2003, George Bush announced the commencement of war in Iraq. He hoped missile strikes would "disarm Iraq, free its people, and defend the world from grave danger. . . . We will accept no outcome but victory." But at what cost? Documentary-theater makers Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen—best known for The Exonerated, their study of falsely convicted prisoners—investigate the impact of the war's first days on Iraqi civilians. Their new play, Aftermath, debuting at the New York Theatre Workshop, draws upon interviews with 35 Iraqis who fled their country for the relative safety of Jordan. Blank and Jensen weave their testimony into a study of the human costs of freedom.
