BLUES IMPLOSION

The mysterious Jandek pops up in Brooklyn

For the last 30 years, elusive death-blues cult hero Jandek has been pumping out dozens and dozens of atonal mysteries. The endless releases on his own Corwood label allows him a DIY ethic that makes Fugazi look like slackers and an anonymity that makes the Residents look like famewhores. Since 2004, he has been stepping out of his Houston homebase for a series of live shows, and after three decades, he may be on the verge of critical mass—well, not really, but Mandy Moore recently said she likes him on Twitter! Tonight, he'll be joined by versatile Stars Like Fleas drummer Ryan Sawyer, Baltimore steel guitarist Susan Alcorn, and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily. Opening will be C Spencer Yeh, who usually makes bowel-bending noise as Burning Star Core, but can channel a little bit of Jandek's doom-drone with his intimate, gorgeously frantic solo turns on violin. With Nate Wooley Trio.
Sun., Sept. 6, 8 p.m., 2009
