Liverpool

Dir. Lisandro Alonso (2008). Argentine director Lisandro Alonso's movies are defined by trajectory. Here a merchant sailor travels to the ends of the earth-his desolate Tierro del Fuego hometown. The takes are long and real time is frequent. Alonso's minimalism is funky and noninflected; the emphasis is on the moment, but formalism rules. Liverpool provides a visceral experience that lodges in one's consciousness like a stone.
