Dir. Max Ophuls (1949). Using a plot that has several times been recycled, this Ophulsian genre film is as stylish and romantic as one might expect but also powered by two crackerjack performances. No-nonsense Joan Bennett plays a briskly desperate mom; James Mason is the would-be blackmailer who goes all gooey for her.
