Dir. Dziga Vertov (1930). Almost wordless, Dziga Vertov’s first sound film was subtitled “Symphony of the Donbas”—and it’s an extremely modern symphony to be sure, filled with abrupt transitions and cacophonous “machine music,” making brilliant use of asynchronous, contrapuntal, artfully mismatched sound.
