The retail slump hasn't inspired us to buy into this season's trends, but the fashionable wares that are closer to home are certainly more appealing, if not a whole lot less expensive. This weekend, two distinct fashion events share their love for style and art by local designers and up-and-coming artists. The first is the Brooklyn Fashion Festival, which features eight independent designers with four runway shows each night that include live music and performance art. The second is the Williamsburg Fashion Weekend, in which there'll be shows on Racecar! by Nettie Tiso (offering designs for both men and women); Erin Weckerle (for Sodafine) and Sirius* (for Treehouse, Brooklyn) will outfit Brooklyn-based all-female band the Hard Nips at their joint show; Saira M. Huff of Total Crap Uninc. will display her fashion choices; and King Gurvy will show his avant-garde, sculpture-meets-fashion line.
