ON THE PULSE

The Knife's fairer half reaches out

Whereas the Knife was born of friction—no doubt a familiarity to its members (siblings Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer)—the solo project to emerge from it steeps easily in the same mood. Fever Ray, Andersson's languid independent effort, is bare and deadpan; it coolly takes from the electro-pop scene, which the Knife's 2006 breakthrough Silent Shout largely spawned, and engages it in fragile wit and loose, guttural sighs. Much like Björk's a cappella Vespertine, Fever Ray is a conduit of emotional outbursts and knowledge of outside worlds.
