Carnegie Hall's Opening Night Gala is more than just another date in the East-Egg bourgeois social calendar; it marks both the New York premiere of John Williams's newest concerto, On Willows and Birches, and the final hurrah for veteran BSO harpist Ann Hobson Pilot. Williams composed the piece as a retirement gift for Pilot, who is one of the Northeast’s most distinguished soloists and one of few black musicians to penetrate the exceedingly conservative domain of symphonic music. The orchestra will also perform romantic works and fantasies by Berlioz, Chopin, and Debussy.
