LOVE HURTS
William Forsythe challenges our ideas of romance
If you’re familiar with the works of the iconoclastic choreographer William Forsythe, you know he’s as far from conventional dance as you can get. In Decreation, which gets its U.S. premiere at BAM tonight, the dancers of his Forsythe Company interact with onstage cameras and their own projected images to tell the story of a couple torn apart by their extreme feelings of love and jealousy. The work, which Forsythe originally created for the Ballett Frankfurt before it folded in 2004, is based on an essay by the poet Anne Carson about the undoing of the self. Asks a dancer in the piece: “The affairs, the late nights, the humiliation . . . is this it?” Don’t expect any easy answers.
