Chain and the Gang do stripped-down soul-punk
“What’s my stance?” Ian Svenonius asks himself in one track from the debut by his latest band, Chain and the Gang. “I like to dance, and smash things up when I get a chance.” Not much has changed, then, over the two decades since Svenonius first emerged as the frontman of Nation of Ulysses, one of D.C. hardcore’s most creative acts; smash-and-dance has more or less been the m.o. of every one of Svenonius’s subsequent outfits, including (but not limited to) the Make Up, Weird War, and Cupid Car Club. On Down With Liberty . . . Up With Chains!, which came out in April on K, the pompadoured rabble rouser offers a more stripped-down version of his trademark soul-punk sound. Don’t worry, though—he’ll fill up the empty space tonight with all manner of rebel-rock rhetoric. With Silk Flowers, Julianna Barwick, and Screens.
