The ELM Three

Some of the most vibrant jazz is created from the ground up—any unit with a killer rhythm section has a distinct advantage over the competition. When bassist Esperanza Spalding and drummer Francisco Mela join forces, as they have for years and did this summer in a Lovano-led outfit, the pulse bounces everywhere, and syncopation is seriously redefined. Their work with Argentine pianist Leo Genovese should be full of free-range romping bolstered by wiry grooves. Coordination is their calling card.
