The Masters of Persian Music consist of four of Iran’s most acclaimed musicians: Mohammad Reza Shajarian on vocals, Homayoun Shajarian on tombak (percussion), Hossein Alizadeh on tar (lute), and, perhaps most famously, Kayhan Kalhor on kamancheh (spike fiddle). Now, Tehran’s Kalhor—a veteran of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project and two-time Grammy nominee—returns to the States alone and bring a new treat: the setar, a fretted, long-necked, four-string lute he has never before played in New York. Kalhor’s nimble, sundry compositions have lately reflected upon the Green Wave democracy movement in Iran; on the setar, he should reach new articulacy.
