A look at Spike Jonze’s skate-video origins

Asks Spike Jonze on the Epicly Later’d website: “How often are you going to get to see Fucktards at MOMA?” Good question. In fact, we guess that tonight’s PopRally party, titled An Evening of Skate Videos, may well be the only time you can catch such a masterpiece of rail grinding, half-pipe riding, and shit-eating in such a high-brow setting. The evening is a part of MOMA’s retrospective on Spike Jonze, who got his start in film shooting skate videos in Southern California. Producer and photographer Patrick O’Dell (of Epicly Later’d) compiled only the best videos—from the ’80s to present day—for the screening, which will be followed by a conversation with legendary skateboarders and filmmakers (including Jonze, Lance Mountain, Greg Hunt, Jake Phelps, Ty Evans, and some surprise guests), as well as a performance by party-punks No Age.
