Splendor in the Grass

Dir. Elia Kazan (1961). Much ado about sexual repression in 1928 Kansas. The young victims of church and family are Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty in his first screen role. The corn grows pretty high in it at times, but some scenes are powerful and effective and the interesting cast includes Kazan's talented wife, Barbara Loden, and William Inge, who wrote the original screenplay for Beatty, as a minister. It was shot by the veteran cameraman Boris Kaufman, one of the greats of his profession.
