GOLDEN ODES

Traditional Chinese folkloric travels to Carnegie Hall

The music of Chinese village celebrations has a storied past—the sounds of modern weddings, funerals, and temple fairs can be linked directly to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–220 A.D.). One of the first unified kingdoms in Chinese history, the empire is revered as a golden age; hear its influence in the Li Family Daoist Band, who perform on shawm (double-reed woodwind) and percussion, and the Zhang Family Band, who incorporate shadow puppets in their traditional act. Wu Man, an accomplished pipa (bowl lute) player curates the regal evening.
