IN FOR THE KILL

British synth-pop duo take Manhattan

La Roux aren't the only English synth-pop import to set the blogs ablaze this year, but they're definitely the most tuneful: On their hit-at-home debut, singer Elly Jackson and programmer Ben Langmaid sound like Temperamental-era Everything but the Girl, minus the big-city sadness. La Roux songs are relentlessly chipper things, even when Jackson's singing about growing pains and going in for the kill and how she's not your toy. Judging by evidence available online, Jackson hasn't quite mustered a stage presence to match her awesome Flock of Seagulls hairdo. But it's early yet—this time next year, she might be taking stages astride a crystal skull à la Kylie Minogue. (Though probably not.)
