Wild River

Dir. Elia Kazan (1960). The protagonist of Kazan’s lyrical, quietly turbulent evocation of the ‘30s is a New Dealer who parachutes into rural Tennessee to evict a stubborn octogenarian and her widowed granddaughter before their land is flooded by a TVA dam. A fairy tale in which a DC prince rescues a backwoods Rapunzel from a reactionary old witch is complicated both by Kazan’s political ambivalence and his casting. Montgomery Clift is the sleeping beauty whose diffidence is (perhaps) thawed by Lee Remick’s sexual warmth.
