Empire Viols

Empire Viols' elegant interpretations of pre-Bach works expose the vivacity of Baroque music, a pious era now often relegated to anthropology. Their namesake instrument, the viola da gamba (a fretted ancestor of the modern bowed string family), requires dexterity and precise temperament, so these days it's nearly as defunct as the Catholic Church. But thanks to these folks, this town won't be free-wheelin' itself straight to hell just yet. Featuring works by Marais.
